Foursquare today announced a new Swarm feature meant to appease those who used to compete for mayorships: leaderboards based on the type of places you check-in to (bars, movie theaters, coffee shops, and so on).
Foursquare argues that since “not everyone has friends who go to the same places as them” today’s addition lets you compete against your friends no matter where they are in the world. Furthermore, if you’re number one for any type of place, you get a golden sticker to add to your check-ins.
In short, the gamification aspect of Foursquare’s service has returned in Swarm. You’ll need version 1.1 for Android and iOS to be able to use the feature. Unfortunately, the company wouldn’t say when Windows Phone users will get it as well.
