Topping tech headlines over the weekend was the Black Friday shopping extravaganza. On Thanksgiving Day alone, IBM reported a 25.4 percent year-over-year increase in sales made from mobile devices.



Overall, U.S. online sales were up 14.3 percent from last year, and mobile sales made up 32.3 percent of purchases. Smartphone were also more popular than tablets for browsing, but when it came to actually making purchases, tablets eked out a win. Plus, Apple iOS users were more willing to spend, averaging $118.57 per order, compared to $95.25 for Android users.

Among the "challenges" listed for researchers are differences between platforms, inaccurate publicly available data feeds, and spammers and bots. The good news is that it's possible to fix some of those flawed uses of social media for research purposes.



Meanwhile, Microsoft will reportedly demonstrate Windows 10's consumer features at a special event in late January. According to unnamed sources cited by The Verge, Redmond's next major reveal will happen after the Consumer Electronics Show; a specific date has not been announced. The company will also reportedly detail plans for Windows phones and tablets and updates for the Xbox One.
