Topping tech headlines on Monday, Microsoft posted 8 percent year-over-year revenue growth in the second quarter.



Quarterly Surface revenue exceeded $1 billion for the first time, and the Xbox One was the top-selling game console in the U.S. market over the holidays. However, the software giant's sales declines in some markets and restructuring costs associated with the integration of Nokia resulted in an overall drop in operating income and EPS.



In other news, Cablevision announced its new "Freewheel" wireless phone service, promising unlimited data downloads on any Wi-Fi connection. The low-cost Internet platform will launch in February on the Motorola Moto G smartphone for $29.95 per month. Optimum Online customers get a discounted price of $9.95 per month; the Moto G will also be marked down to $99.95.



Meanwhile, Apple is expected to announce today that, for the first time, it moved more smartphones in China than the U.S. Thanks to a deal with China Mobile, the country reportedly accounted for 36 percent of iPhone shipments in the most recent quarter; the U.S. made up only 24 percent.
