Deviously Simply Strategy Game 'ICE' Lands on Android

Can a game created in only 48 hours be any good? It turns out, yeah, it can. ICE is a new game on Android (coming soon to iOS) that was created for the Ludum Dare, an online game jam that encourages developers to make a game in just one weekend. Piotr Wójcik conceived of ICE as a simple real-time strategy game, but it's also oddly addictive.

If you've ever played Galcon, or one of the similar strategy titles, you'll grasp the basics of ICE. The goal is to capture all the enemy bases on the map, but you can only attack the bases connected to ones you already own. When your units arrive, they do battle with the enemy forces while also bringing down the base's hitpoints. Get it to zero, and you take ownership. This increases the size of your army, but it also comes with new headaches.

The twist is that your units in this game have to move as one—you tap someplace on the screen and every single one of your troops will move to that location. At first, this seems overly simple, but then you realize how much harder it is to defend your territory from the enemy. It forces you into a different kind of strategic planning. Is it worth trying to capture that well-placed enemy base at the edge of your territory, or should you play it safe and stay close to home?

As you take new territory and fight the enemy, you'll gain experience that can be used to increase the effectiveness of your units. Nothing looks different as you upgrade those little triangular ships, but they become much more formidable. The regular size map can be played for free, but you'll have to upgrade to the pro version via an in-app purchase for $1.99 to get the bigger (and much more challenging) map.
