Canon this week introduced the XC10 4K Digital Camcorder featuring video and still multimedia creation capabilities which leverage the company's most advanced 4K imaging system to date.

Capable of producing 4K and Full HD video, as well as 12-megapixel still images, the XC10 also allows users to extract 8-megapixel stills from recorded 4K video via a built-in function, Canon said. The digital camcorder sports a 1-inch, 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, 10x wide-angle zoom lens with a 2x digital teleconverter, and a SanDisk 64GB CFast 2.0 card and card reader, while helping shooters keep a steady hand with Canon's Optical Image Stabilization technology.

"With the introduction of the XC10 4K Digital Camcorder, we are looking to deliver a robust new camcorder that will allow for an ever expanding creative expression. Enabling the virtually seamless capture of stunning 4K video with the added convenience of still image capture and 4K frame extraction, XC10 users are empowered with multiple ways to share their artistic visions," Canon U.S.A. president and COO Yuichi Ishizuka said in a statement.

Of course, all of these multimedia bells and whistles will cost a pretty penny. The XC10 is scheduled for release in June at a wallet-draining price of $2,499.

The XC10 marks the introduction of Canon's new and improved 4K imaging technology. The camcorder's CMOS sensor "delivers up to 12 stops of dynamic range for impressive detail in both highlights and lowlights, whether the user is shooting video or still photos," while the unit's 10x wide-angle zoom lens "offers a 35mm-equivalent zoom ratio of 24.1-241mm for still photos and 27.3-273mm for movies," according to the company.

That performance is driven by Canon's next-gen, proprietary DIGIC DV5 signal processor, which enables 4K video acquisition, 5-axis full HD image stabilization, and slow and fast motion recording, the company said.

The camcorder utilizes two new codecs to maintain video and still image quality—the XF-AVC Intra codec for 4K recording and XF-AVC Long GOP for Full HD recording. Canon also said the XC10 is suitable for journalists and news agencies in their work, with a platform that can "easily expand into 4K Electronic News Gathering (ENG) coverage."
